Quasar host galaxies

چکیده

The discovery that the formation and evolution of supermassive black holes and their host spheroids are intimately related has given new impetus to the study of quasar host galaxies. As a result, many current studies of quasar hosts are focused on exploring the redshift evolution of the black-hole:spheroid relation, and the evolution of the massive galaxy population as a whole. This brief review of the subject begins by discussing the principal motivation behind studies of quasar hosts at the current time, before proceeding to summarise many of the important advances made in the field over the last fifteen years. Finally, current studies of quasar host galaxies are discussed, along with the prospects for important advances in the near future.

Quasar Host Galaxies in the FORS Deep Field

Context. The evolution of quasar host galaxies is still hardly studied at high redshifts (z > 2), although this is a very interesting redshift range as both the quasar activity and the star formation rate density have their peak at z ≈ 2–3. This makes is especially interesting to study properties of quasar host galaxies, such as the star formation rate or the black hole mass at this redshift. A...

The Contribution from Scattered Light to Quasar Galaxy Hosts

We present models representing the scattering of quasar radiation off free electrons and dust grains in geometries that approximate the structure of quasar host galaxies. We show that, for reasonable assumptions, scattering alone can easily produce ratios of nuclear (point source) to extended fluxes comparable to those determined in studies of quasar hosts. This result suggests that scattered q...

Evidence for Quasar Activity Triggered by Galaxy Mergers in Hst Observations of Dust-reddened Quasars

We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS images of 13 dust-reddened type 1 quasars selected from the FIRST/ 2MASS Red Quasar Survey. These quasars have high intrinsic luminosities after correction for dust obscuration ( 23:5 MB 26:2 from K-magnitude). The images show strong evidence of recent or ongoing interaction in 11 of the 13 cases, even before the quasar nucleus is subtracted. None of the ho...

On the Role of the Environments and Star Formation for Quasar Activity

We investigate the host galaxy and environment properties of a sample of 400 low z (<0.5) quasars that were imaged in the SDSS Stripe82. We can detect and study the properties of the host galaxy for more than 75% of the data sample. We discover that quasar are mainly hosted in luminous galaxies of absolute magnitude M − 3 < M(R) < M∗1 and that in the quasar environments the galaxy number densit...

Quasars and their host galaxies

This review attempts to describe developments in the fields of quasar and quasar host galaxies in the past five. In this time period, the Sloan and 2dF quasar surveys have added several tens of thousands of quasars, with Sloan quasars being found to z > 6. Obscured, or partially obscured quasars have begun to be found in significant numbers. Black hole mass estimates for quasars, and our confid...
